The exact requirement varies by manufacturer and calibre — Rolex movements typically require around 650–800 TPD, while some Patek Philippe calibres require more. Your watch manual will specify the recommended winding requirement, or you can look it up by calibre number. Our winders offer a range of TPD settings to match your specific movement.
Rolex, Omega, and most Swiss movements wind in both directions, so bi-directional is the safest and most efficient setting. Some movements — such as certain Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre calibres — wind in one direction only. Check your watch manual or contact the manufacturer if unsure. When in doubt, bi-directional is the correct default for most watches.
Technically, a fully wound mainspring will disengage automatically — you cannot over-wind a modern automatic watch. However, keeping the winder running constantly is unnecessary.
